Water must learn from energy market if competition is pursued

Regulator Ofwat has yesterday published its findings on the costs and benefits of introducing competition in the household retail water market in England.

Responding to the report, Tony Smith, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water, said: “Most households like the idea of choice, but our research shows very few – around 6 per cent – of customers are likely to switch for a saving of up to £10.”

“We want to avoid a situation like in energy where a largely inactive market leads to some customers paying more and being disappointed. If competition is pursued we will want to make sure Government and Ofwat are clear on how these and other potential dangers are avoided in water.”
