Conwy County Borough Council has launched a new consultation on additional council tax premiums for both second homes or long-term empty homes in Conwy.

A long-term empty home is defined as a dwelling that is unoccupied and ‘substantially’ unfurnished for a continuous period of at least one year.

The proposals

The council had originally planned to charge a 50% council tax premium on long-term empty homes and second homes from April 2020. However, the plans were revoked.

Currently, the council continues to charge a council tax premium of 25% on both long-term empty properties and second homes.

Now the council is proposing to charge double this amount-a 50% premium on both categories as of 1st April 2021.

This will be subject to a review during 2021/2022.

The consultation is inviting views on the proposed premium increase, and the NRLA will also submit a response to this consultation, which closes on 26th June. The results will be considered by the Task and Finish Group.
