Witness appeal after death of man arrested in Nottingham

We are seeking witnesses as part of an investigation into the death of a man who was in police custody in Nottingham.

The man was arrested in the Carlton area at around 10pm after police responded to a reported incident there on Friday 5 January.

As he was being transported in a police vehicle to a custody suite he became unwell and was transferred to an ambulance outside the Church of the Sacred Heart on Carlton Hill at around 10.30pm. He was then taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham but sadly it was later confirmed that he had died.

We began an independent investigation after being notified by Nottinghamshire Police and want to hear from anyone who saw any interaction between the man and police outside the church when the ambulance arrived. Anyone with information can contact our investigation on 0800 096 9070 or email witness@policeconduct.gov.uk.

Investigators will be putting up witness appeal boards and conducting house to house enquiries in the area this week.

IOPC Director for the Midlands, Derrick Campbell, said: “Our investigation is looking at the contact between police officers and the man prior to his tragic death.

“I would like to express my condolences to his family, friends any anyone else affected. We have met with the man’s family to explain our role and our thoughts remain with them.”
