techUK Responds to Government post-Brexit Court Plan

Commenting on the Government’s paper on judicial cooperation post Brexit, techUK Deputy CEO, Antony Walker, said:

“The tech sector is global so the rules governing relationships between countries are hugely important. The proposals set out by the Government show a welcome recognition of the importance of legal and judicial oversight for whatever relationship is ultimately agreed between the UK and the EU post Brexit.

“However, the ability to take action to ensure both the UK and the EU abide by that future set of rules cannot lie with the countries alone. It is important that business and individuals can seek redress for actions that contravene any new agreement. Any new court or arbitration system must be accessible to all who need it.

“Creating a new system, and ensuring it is properly staffed and resourced will take time. The Government’s proposals therefore again highlight the need for a substantial interim period that gives time to ensure that the new enforcement mechanism is ready from day one.“
