techUK at CogX 2020

techUK is proud to be partnering with CogX this year to produce 5 sessions for the Next Gen Infrastructure and Cloud Services track.

The theme for CogX 2020 is “How do we the next 10 years right?”. Throughout the three-day virtual festival we’ll be joined by industry, academia and policymakers to explore the pivotal role of digital technologies that will underpin and enable next generation infrastructure in the UK and how businesses can best prepare for what is to come. Details on timings and speakers are outlined below.

On Tuesday 9 June at 12pm, techUK’s President Jacqueline De Rojas will be hosting a fireside chat with Tony Blair, former Prime Minister and now Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, to discuss global leadership and how technology can help countries and citizens transition to a new normal in light of COVID-19. The full agenda is available here.

techUK have a limited number of complimentary CogX passes to give away to techUK members. These festival passes provide you with access to additional side events and workshops. To take advantage of this, please email Charlie.Wyatt@techuk.org for details.

City 4.0: Connectivity for a smarter world

Tuesday 9 June, 10am

Connectivity remains fundamental to our digital economy and society. As we look ahead to a future where communities, places and cities will be built on, and run by, next-generation infrastructure and cloud-based services, we ask how important will connectivity be to making industry 4.0 a reality?

Today the ability to guarantee the ongoing quality, resilience, low latency, and performance of connectivity being offered has already become a key part of organisations decision-making around technology adoption particularly in cloud computing and IoT.

This session will explore to what extent is this likely to change in the near future, particularly with the emergence and take up of 5G. With the Government’s ongoing 5G Testbed & Trials and commitment to nationwide deployment of full fibre by 2025, this panel will also discuss how we can build on these developments and ensure the benefits of 5G, and cloud computing, are felt across the whole of the UK.

Moderator: Matthew Evans, Director, Markets, techUK Panellists: Tracy Westall Non-Executive Director, WM5G Limited, Richard Osborne, Enterprise Architect & Thought Leader, Cisco and Daniel Butler, Director of Communications and Policy Strategy, Hyperoptic

Your fingerprint: Why digital IDs will be vital to our future?

Tuesday 9 June, 2pm

COVID-19 has highlighted the need to live digitally without unnecessary face-to-face meetings or handling of paper documents and given us all a glimpse into what the future may hold. Whether it’s proving our identity when getting a job, renting a flat, applying for financial services, travelling, shopping or other activities. As Next Generation Infrastructure is expected to increasingly blend the digital and physical world, this session will explore how important Digital ID could become and discuss the steps needed to make digital ID’s a reality. This session will also discuss how digital ID presents a real opportunity, in a Post COVID-19 world, to kick-start the economy, save money, help prevent fraud and keep people safe.

Moderator: Ruth Milligan, Head Digital ID and Open Data, techUK Panellists: Chuka Umunna, Director, Digital ID Net Inc, Julie Dawson, Director of Regulatory & Policy, Yoti and Dan Johnson, Vice President, Identity Products Cyber and Intelligence Solutions, Mastercard

Are we ready for a revolution in next-generation infrastructure?

Wednesday 10 June, 10am

How do we prepare for a next generation infrastructure enabled digital future? How do we create the right environment now for organisations to thrive in this new future where the digital and physical world is increasingly blending? In this session we will explore the pivotal role of key digital technologies that will underpin and enable next generation infrastructure in the UK and whether businesses are ready for what is to come. With today’s infrastructure systems becoming more web-based, interconnected and transnational, we will focus on how companies can best prepare for the latest advancements in next-generation infrastructure that are flexible, interoperable and, importantly, secure. In addition, we will explore what the potential reprioritisation of infrastructural investment during the COVID-19 pandemic could mean for future adoption.

Moderator: Sue Daley, Associate Director, Tech and Innovation, techUK Panellists: Jacqueline Davey, IBM Global Managing Director BP PLC, IBM, Mark Thomson, Executive Chair STFC and Senior Responsible Officer for the UKRI Infrastructure Roadmap Programme and Gavin Jackson, EMEA MD, UiPath

The power of supercomputing- How do we get the UK strategy right?

Wednesday 10 June, 12pm

Supercomputing has a vital role to play in making industry 4.0 a reality. In today’s world, where we’re experiencing an exponential creation in the volume of data, a supercomputer can discover insights in vast troves of otherwise impenetrable information and simulate real-world situations in lieu of vastly expensive physical recreations. In this session, the panel will discuss the immediate action that’s needed to ensure we get the UK’s strategy for supercomputing right and the risks associated with not investing now.

Drawing on international comparisons, the panel will examine how the UK can play catch-up and learn from countries that are already investing in their supercomputing capacity. Further consideration will also be given to how we build on, and retain, the expertise that’s concentrated in our existing supercomputing centres and help ensure the benefits of this technology are accessible to organisations across the UK.

Moderator: Alison Kennedy, Director, Hartree Centre at STFC Panellists: Dr Ben Bennett, Director, HPC Strategic Marketing, HPE, Professor Mark Parsons, Professor, University of Edinburgh and Daniele Piccarozzi, Sr. Business Development Manager, Arm.

Next Generation Data: Are we equipped to make the most of data generated by next generation infrastructure?

Wednesday 10 June, 3pm

In recent years cloud and mobile technologies, paired with technologies such as artificial intelligence, have led to an explosion in the generation of data. As next generation infrastructure evolves and becomes more accessible, the creation of data will inevitably increase exponentially. In this session we will explore whether organisations are equipped to cope with the volume of data that will be generated by our next gen infrastructure future and how we get this right from a technical, privacy, ethical and societal point of view.

Moderator: Antony Walker, Deputy CEO, techUK Panellists: Kulveer Ranger, SVP Strategy & Communications, Atos, Zandra Moore, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Panintelligence and Joe Baguley, VP & CTO EMEA, VMware.
