techUK supports Living Wage Foundation’s Aim to Accredit more Tech Companies
Speaking at the Living Wage Foundation’s breakfast during London Tech Week, techUK Deputy CEO stressed the importance of paying a fair wage.
techUK was pleased to speak at a recent London Tech Week breakfast, which brought together tech companies, leaders and supporters of the real living wage to share why paying the living wage is important for tech companies across the UK.
The tech industry is underrepresented in the accredited living wage network with 110 employers signed up as official living wage employers.
Speaking at the breakfast, techUK Deputy CEO Antony Walker provided a closing statement which gave a broader industry perspective on how tech companies can be trailblazers for good, well-paid work.
The industry does a great job at creating high-skilled, high-value jobs across the country. Tech is driving growth in local economies across the UK. From Brighton to Belfast, digital is making an incredible impact on people’s lives. We are driving shared and sustainable growth across Britain, helping to reshape and rebalance our economy.
However, Antony made the point that the tech sector has to be better about telling this story and ensuring their supply chains are also adhering to the high standards expected within their organisations. Tech has reputation of being change-makers, and Antony stated the industry must continue to be leaders and trailblazers in important social issues such as living wage, future of work and equalities.
After reflecting on the anecdotes heard from the tech companies represented at the event, Antony put a challenge to the sector to follow the examples of the 110 tech companies who are accredited living wage employers. He stressed that while many tech companies are considering the future of work and innovation, the sector also has to act on the present. The living wage is a great example of this, and industry should come together as agents of change.
techUK will continue to work with the Living Wage Foundation, ensuring tech companies take the step to become accredited employers.
