A
new £1 million regeneration fund to help boost town centres has yesterday
been announced by Housing and Regeneration Minister Carl
Sargeant.
The
Welsh Government fund will support twenty Town Centre Partnerships across Wales
that are encouraging activities that contribute to:
- increasing footfall
- increasing public, private and community
investment
- reducing the impact of vacant
properties
- supporting businesses and services to establish, grow
and prosper
- supporting diversification by promoting alternative uses
(such as residential and leisure)
- supporting innovative approaches to
regeneration
Each Town Centre will receive £50k, with an
expectation that match-funding of a minimum of 50% will be put forward from
other sources.
The
Minister said:
“Our High Streets should be the community spaces
at the heart of our towns and villages, places to visit and to trade that
produce a vibrant local economy and community.
“These are challenging times for our towns and
city centres and many of the issues being faced require a local, tailored
approach. The new funding will support this and will help the successful
applicants give their town centres the boost they need.”
