£2.3 million boost for housing with care projects

More than £2.3 million is being made available to support new housing and care projects, helping people with care and support needs to live independently, in their own communities, for longer.

• The Welsh Government is providing more than £2.3 million through the Housing with Care Fund to support new housing and care projects in Caerphilly and Carmarthenshire.
• The funding will allow more people with care and support needs to live independently in their own communities, avoid unnecessary hospital stays and return home sooner.
• The investment supports an integrated approach to housing, health and social care.

Allocated through the Housing with Care Fund (HCF), the funding will support several projects in Caerphilly and Carmarthenshire. The projects will deliver new social rented housing with care, such as extra-care housing and supported living, so people can remain independent rather than moving into residential care before they need to.

The funding will also support community-based intermediate care and accommodation, including step-up and step-down facilities, helping people avoid unnecessary hospital stays and return home sooner after a hospital admission. 

The Housing with Care Fund is a five-year Welsh Government capital programme supporting the delivery of housing and accommodation for people with care and support needs. It is central to the government's ambition to bring housing, health and social care closer together, so people can be supported at home, in their own communities, rather than in hospitals or residential care.

By increasing the supply of specialist housing and accommodation, the fund helps people stay closer to home and their loved ones, eases pressure on hospitals and care homes and builds a more sustainable health and care system for the future.

Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning, Siân Gwenllian said:

Everyone deserves a home where they can live safely, independently and with dignity, whatever their care needs. This funding will make a real difference to people's lives, helping them stay in their communities and close to family and friends, instead of being moved away for care they could receive closer to home.

By investing in housing with care, we are also easing the pressure on our hospitals and care homes, helping more people return home sooner after they've been in hospital, and freeing up capacity for those who need it most.

This is what a truly integrated approach to housing, health and social care looks like in practice, and I'm proud of the difference it will make to people right across Wales.
