Dundee will
benefit from an additional £8.3 million in funding which will be used to
create a new waterfront area to surround the V&A Museum of Design Dundee
building and complement its spectacular design, John Swinney announced
yesterday.
The funding,
awarded by Scottish Enterprise and which is separate to the V&A Dundee
building costs, will help create an attractive environment around the museum,
providing visitors with an outstanding first impression worthy of the first
purpose-built design museum in the UK outside London.
V&A Dundee
will appear to float within two pools of water, reinforcing the connection
between the museum and the River Tay. Capitalising on this riverside setting
the planned design will transform the approach to the Kengo Kuma-designed
building using imaginative landscaping and planting techniques to complement
the extraordinary architecture. The new space will provide a vibrant city stage
for the public to enjoy activities, events and installations at the
waterfront.
Finance Secretary
John Swinney said:
“The
financial support from the Scottish Government via Scottish Enterprise, will
regenerate the Dundee Central Waterfront and will offer views over the river,
the city and the museum.
“This in
turn will create local jobs and contribute significantly to the regeneration of
the city itself.
“The V&A
project is a fantastic, once in a generation opportunity for the city to
re-invent itself and enjoy greater economic success. I am delighted that the
Scottish Government is part of this ground-breaking
development."
Mick McHugh,
director at Scottish Enterprise added:
“This is a
nationally important project which will pave the way for the V&A Dundee
which will be transformational for the local and national economies, both in
terms of visitor numbers and jobs with more than 860 net construction, tourism
and waterfront district jobs anticipated in the next decade.
“After the
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao opened there was a 25 per cent increase in
employment in its tourism and hospitality sectors, with knock-on job increases
in other sectors and we are already seeing very encouraging investment in the
hotel sector in Dundee.”
Dundee City
Council administration leader Councillor Ken Guild said:
"I am pleased
that Dundee has secured this funding from Scottish Enterprise. This promenade
will add an extra dimension to the V&A Dundee and make it even more
attractive for local people, visitors and investors."
The promenade
works are currently being tendered as part of the overall building construction
tender by Dundee City Council.
The V&A Dundee
building is planned for completion in 2016 and will host major exhibitions of
international design from 2017, celebrating Scotland’s rich design
heritage and helping develop contemporary talent.

About
Dundee Waterfront
The £1
billion transformation of Dundee city waterfront, which encompasses 240
hectares of development land stretching 8km along the River Tay, is a
strategic, focused and forward-looking 30 year project (2001-2031) that is
propelling the city to international acclaim. The area is divided into five
focused zones: Riverside; Seabraes; The Central Waterfront, City Quay and
Dundee Port.
The Dundee
Waterfront development has been ranked as the 3rd most active regeneration
project (Planning magazine, April 2013) and is expected to become
Scotland's first sustainable community (BREEAM), which will help developers
to meet corporate governance obligations while offering the benefit of lower
whole life development costs.
Currently in stage
3 of the 30 year project, the city landscape is changing at a steady pace.
Nearly half of the £1 billion investment has already been committed, a
number of developments have been completed and many are underway.

and Scottish Enterprise.
The Scottish
Government has committed £15m in capital towards the project’s
£45m budget. As of April 2014, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has
