A hike on fuel duty would be “deeply unfair” and damage our economic recovery says IEA expert

3 Feb 2021 01:55 PM

Dr Richard Wellings, Head of Transport at the free market think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs commented on reports of a potential fuel duty hike

“Fuel duty is a tax on business, trade and jobs, so raising it will damage the UK economy at a time when a strong recovery is desperately needed.

“It is also deeply unfair, with road transport already very heavily taxed compared with other sectors.

“While action is needed to tackle ballooning government debt, ministers should focus on cutting wasteful spending rather than hiking harmful taxes.”
