APCC Lead welcomes HMICFRS Report on Police Leadership

APCC Lead for Leadership Dafydd Llywelyn welcomed yesterday’s report from HMICFRS regarding police leadership

“It is pleasing to see the positive improvements forces are making in improving working conditions for police officers and staff, especially in relation to wellbeing support. The APCC are working closely with the College of Policing and National Police Chief’s Council to support forces in addressing areas for improvement and implementing the recent review of leadership development.”

“It is concerning however, that the vast majority of forces were unable to demonstrate that all their officers and staff had received annual performance and development reviews or evidence appropriate succession planning. This is unacceptable and PCCs will wish to address the matter with their respective Chief Constables at their earliest convenience. The recent developments in direct entry programmes will provide new opportunities for talented individuals from outside the police service to join, bringing fresh perspectives and enhancing the capabilities of our leaders. With increasing demand and limited resources, it is vital that we continue to improve how we attract, support, develop and promote our workforce and ensure we plan effectively for the future of policing services.”
