BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, welcomes the new BBC Children’s internet safety website launched yesterday by BBC Director General Tony Hall, and is delighted that Niel McLean, Computing Education CPD Senior Manager at BCS has been asked to sit on the panel as one of its expert advisors.

The new site www.bbc.co.uk/ownit is aimed at 9-12 year olds, and is there to help them develop confidence and resilience in the digital space - and to help them become happy, healthy and creative digital citizens. The site is full of fun and empowering tips, insight, stories and advice.

The BBC will be using the site to showcase the work of other trusted organisations with similar aims to empower or support young people online, as well as by working collaboratively with external charities and organisations.

Niel McLean, says: “Access to web and social media sites is a fact of life nowadays for most young people, and whilst that bring with it its own issues and dangers, it also creates boundless opportunities for them as well, and this site focusses on giving children the knowledge and skills to take charge of their online lives - the more children understand about computing, the more they can get the benefits of being online while avoiding the hazards.”

He continues: It’s great that BCS is acknowledged on the site as one of the BBC’s expert advisors - who we hope to do more work with the organisation in the future.”
