BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT is delighted to be supporting The Royal Academy of Engineering’s ‘This is Engineering’ campaign which launched yesterday (24 January). This national campaign aims to bring engineering to life for young people, and show them how they can pursue a career that is rewarding, varied, well-paid and in-demand.

Targeting young people aged 13-18 through a national advertising campaign on social media platforms, ‘This is Engineering’ will present a modern, positive image of engineering. Using existing young engineers, it will show how engineering is behind many of the things that young people are already interested in, such as technology, sport, fashion, and that they can follow what they love into engineering, and in doing so help shape the future.

Julia Adamson, Director of Education at BCS says: “Computing, as a subset of engineering, is at the heart of what drives our modern society; from robotics, machine learning, and AI to medical tech advances, and the apps that we have downloaded on our mobile phones, technology is shaping the future around us. And engineering is a career for everyone, irrespective of their gender, background, or upbringing.

“‘This is Engineering’ is a great campaign that BCS is delighted to support. IT and digital skills are as part of the engineering profession as mechanical and civil engineering, and it is currently one of the professions where recruitment is growing steadily, making it an attractive prospect for anyone considering their future career. From paving the way for medical breakthroughs or making a much-loved hobby possible for someone with a disability, to bringing music, film and theatre to life, there are tremendous career opportunities for young people in this area.

“Digital engineers are going to continue to be in high demand, and the number of positions available within the profession is growing hugely every year. For young people making some key life decisions - a job in IT could prove to be a great choice. This growing sector allows individuals to be creative, solve problems and influence change at a scale that very few professions can match.”

The campaign website, ‘This is Engineering’ has lots of information and inspirational videos for young people.
