The Barefoot Computing Project, a partnership between BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and BT, has been nominated for the Digital Skills or Inclusion Initiative of the Year in the 2017 Digital Leaders 100 Awards (DL100). The Awards recognises the 100 companies and causes leading the way in the UK’s digital future.

The Barefoot Computing Project introduces primary school teachers to exciting teaching resources that help them to start teaching computing in a way that develops children’s creativity and analytical thinking skills and at the same time support learning in other subjects like numeracy and literacy.

Barefoot Computing is recognised for offering free teaching resources and face-to-face training workshops led by specially trained volunteers to give primary school teachers the confidence to teach computer science. The nomination highlights our work promoting tech literacy.

Bill Mitchell, Director of Education at BCS, said: “To be nominated for the Digital Skills and Inclusion Initiative of the Year Award in the DL100 Awards is a huge honour. Computing underpins so many important areas that can drive the success of future generations. The fact that over 1 million children nationally have directly benefited from the Barefoot initiative is testament to its success.

“Computing shapes how children go about their daily lives, and what they are capable of achieving as they grow up. That’s why this Barefoot Computing project, is so important. It’s exciting that together with BT we can equip primary age school children with the essential building blocks to understand the digital world. Please boost our nomination by voting for us in the DL 100 Awards.”

More than 500 organisations were nominated for DL100 Awards this year.

The results will be announced at an Awards dinner on 22 June.
