COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma, praised the leadership Denmark is showing on climate action, following a visit earlier this week.

Mr Sharma met with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and key members of her cabinet including the Climate, Foreign, Finance and Ministers. These meetings covered a wide range of issues including; climate finance, the benefits of partnership building to decarbonise economies, and international alliances.

As a key partner on climate change, Denmark and the UK will continue to work closely together ahead of COP26 later this year, and help to raise climate ambition across the EU.

While in Copenhagen, Mr Sharma also hosted a roundtable with Danish businesses who are playing a leading role in driving innovation on climate alongside government and consumers, demonstrating how reducing emissions and economic success go hand in hand.

Speaking after the visit Mr Sharma yesterday said:

“With six months to go we are working hard to ensure COP26 will be a success and international partnerships will be key to this.

“Denmark’s climate leadership, particularly its long-standing climate action across its economy, is very welcome.

“The UK and Denmark will continue to work closely together in the run up to Glasgow as we look to raise ambition on climate action.”

Danish Climate and Energy Minister Dan Jørgensen yesterday said:

“I had a very productive meeting with COP26 President Alok Sharma. We discussed how to ensure a successful COP26 in Glasgow - with a retained commitment to the Paris Agreement and to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees.

“Denmark remains fully committed to support the incoming COP26 presidency in this crucial endeavour.”
