CUTTING CONGESTION ON THE CAPITAL'S ROADS

Since TfL has coordinated London's roadworks more than 144,000 hours, equivalent of 16 years traffic congestion was avoided last year.

The transport authority shared trenches with other service providers at almost 1,200 sites across the capital to avoid the same roads being dug up repeatedly by different organisations.

Whenever roadworks took place, TfL gave the London boroughs, utility companies and other developers the chance to lay cables, repair water pipes or set up electrical connections. In October, when a new traffic island was being built on Battersea Park Road for the Northern line extension and Battersea Power Station development, TfL coordinated works by BT, Thames Water, UK Power Networks and Virgin Media.

The utility works would have individually required an extra 45 days of closures and disruption, but were all completed at the same time.

Mayor Boris Johnson MP said: 'It is crucial that we use the limited road space within our streets as effectively as possible. That is why I fought to get a lane rental scheme for London and that is what has created a strong incentive for this type of joint working. I am delighted it is proving successful.'
