Philip Hammond’s speech last week at the Conference of the Christian Democratic Union’s Economic Council showed that a more collaborative approach to EU negotiations may pay dividends in securing the ‘deep and special partnership’ the UK seeks.

There was a welcome shift in tone, but ministers should not earn respect within the EU by running down their cabinet colleagues.
