Chancellor responds to Treasury Committee on help for those not eligible for Government’s support measures

Rt Hon. Mel Stride MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, wrote to Rt Hon. Rishi Sunak MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, earlier this month urging him to set out what action he will take to help those who aren’t eligible for the Treasury’s support measures in response to coronavirus.

The Committee received the Chancellor’s response last night and has published it today.

Chair's comments

Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Stride said:

“The Chancellor has rightly said that the Government has shown that it “will take action quickly to iron out problems” with the measures that have been announced to tackle the coronavirus. He has done a great deal to support the economy, but he should not be putting away the ironing board just yet.

“Whilst the Government has undoubtedly taken bold action at pace, the Treasury Committee continues to receive evidence of the hard edges and delivery challenges that need addressing, such as further help for those receiving self-employment related dividends and the slow pace at which emergency loans are reaching businesses.

“We have requested daily updates on loans from UK Finance and the British Business Bank on the banks’ progress on getting out this vital funding.”
