Commission comments on Government announcement on closing the gender pay gap

15 Jul 2015 01:46 PM

Commenting in response to the Prime Minister’s announcement about Government measures to end the gender pay gap, a Commission spokesperson, said:

“We welcome the Government’s commitment to eliminating the gender pay gap in a generation.  45 years after the Equal Pay Act, the gender pay gap still persists, with the overall gap currently standing at 19.1 per cent.

“The Government’s implementation of the Equality Act provision will make it mandatory for companies to publish their gender pay gap. This is a positive development, given the poor response to previous attempts to encourage employers to publish this information voluntarily.  Improving transparency about differences in the pay of men and women will shine a light on this important issue and encourage companies to take steps to close their gender pay gaps so they can attract and retain the best talent  in their workforce.

“We also welcome the Government’s recognition that, as well as increased transparency about gender pay, concerted action to support women to achieve their potential in the workplace is needed. This includes developing flexible career paths for promotion, quality part-time work, regular pay audits and non- discriminatory recruitment processes.

“Women are a vital part of the workforce and these improvements will help support them at each level of their career. We look forward to taking part in the Government’s consultation.”“Women are a vital part of the workforce and these improvements will help support them at each level of their career.
