Commission’s position on the Government’s planned Bill of Rights

11 May 2016 02:59 PM

Commenting in response to comments a House of Lords committee that Michael Gove's plan to replace the Human Rights Act could deal a blow to the UK's standing in organisations like the EU and the Council of Europe, Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said:

“Our view is that any changes to our current human rights framework should not water down the protections contained in the Human Rights Act.

“The Commission has always said that any changes to the legal framework should not weaken the human rights protections that we all enjoy. We welcome a debate on such an important issue but would not support a reversal of the leading global role Britain has long played in protecting and promoting human rights.”
