Communities across Wales get outdoors this August with £315,192 National Lottery funding

More than £300,000 of public money has been given out to 74 communities across Wales from the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All this August. All these awards are made possible thanks to people buying tickets for the National Lottery.

August 2017 saw 74 communities celebrating more than just the unusually sunny bank holiday weekend by enjoying the outdoors. Many Welsh communities used their grants to organise shows and festivals: Denbigh and Flint County Show bought 500 sheep hurdles with £4,750, Buckley in Flintshire put on a Town Festival with £4,500 and the Little Village Big Show in Llangechain, Powys ran workshops and hired some new attractions with their £4,984, Goginan in Ceredigion hired a marquee and sound system for £2,886 for their Village Show, Kidwelly Industrial Museum, Carmarthenshire held a bank holiday event for the local community with £4,880, and in Blaenau Gwent £5,000 was awarded to Frindiau Tyleri to fund Aberfest 2017.

Inner-city gardeners received a boost with Cilybebyll Community Gardens in Swansea getting £5,000 for sheds and raised beds and Pentrebane Zone in Cardiff will use £4,926 to transform two derelict spaces into gardens. Parklands Amenity Fund in Newport will spend their £5,000 on a sensory garden and £4,850 will help Ysgol Pen y Bryn in Swansea Young Grower’s Project. Sy Tyfaelog’s Chuch in Bargoed will fund a community garden with £5,000.
Bowling Clubs also benefitted; Churchstoke received £4,999 to improve the grounds and Talgarth bought an aerator with their £4,410.

Other projects basking in the glow of a successful bid include:
Tempart in Newport who will use their £5,000 on working creatively with people with dementia to help them capture their memories on film before they fade.

Not far away in Cwmbran, Randomz Ltd will be spending their £5,000 on setting up a breakfast café for young people to gain experience of catering and get some qualifications. They will be providing up to thirty free breakfasts to disadvantaged young people.

The National Group Dance Company Wales will use their £5,000 grant to deliver a programme of dance sessions in Blackwood for people living with Parkinsons.

Llys Nini Branch (Cardiff to Swansea) of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will spend £4,999 on a fully equipped coffee trailer to provide refreshments for their visitors.
