Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Julie James toured the Wylfa Newydd site recently as part of a number of appointments in Anglesey and North Wales.

The Deputy Minister was keen to learn more about the island’s growing reputation as an energy producer and how the Welsh Government can continue supporting the skills requirements of employers.

Deputy Minister, Julie James, said:

“I am impressed by the Energy Island Programme’s (EIP) aspirations to put Anglesey and North West Wales at the forefront of energy research and development, production and servicing.

“Last year we awarded £2.3m to Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to focus on preparing people for work on major Anglesey energy developments.

“The Welsh Government recognises the importance of capital investment in further education, and last week the Education Minister agreed to greater flexibility within our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme to enable the allocation of funding support for priority projects in this sector.

"Grwp Llandrillo Menai’s Engineering Centre of Excellence in Llangefni is identified as one such priority. This £10 million proposal has direct links to the provision of skills for the Wylfa Newydd power station.

“I am delighted to announce that my officials will work with Grwp Llandrillo Menai to develop a business case in support of this exciting project.

“Subject to an approved business case, the Welsh Government will provide up to 50% funding for this proposal.

“A new Engineering Centre of Excellence will be able to train hundreds of people to meet the skill needs of Wylfa and energy sector employers.

“This is another example of the Welsh Government supporting the economy.”

The 21st Century Schools and Education Capital Programme is a major, long-term and strategic capital investment programme, aimed at creating educational communities fit for the 21st century in Wales.  It will see a £1.4billion first wave investment for schools and education projects across Wales.  The funding is delivered jointly with local authorities.
