Education begins at home

A major new campaign showing how parents can
make a real difference to their children’s education has been launched by
Education Minister Huw Lewis.
The
campaign, called Education begins at home, will encourage parents to get
involved in their child’s education by showing them how little things can
make a big difference.
Things like waking them up early for school; making sure
they get a good night’s sleep; making time to read with them; helping
with number work; going to parents evenings and asking them about school will
all help them do so much better at school.
The
Minister will formally launch the campaign today with parents at Herbert
Thompson Primary School in Ely. The campaign advert and information on how to
get involved are all available on our Facebook page.
Huw
Lewis said:
"I want to see standards and performance in Welsh
schools improve across the board.
"It’s clear that parents have an integral
role in making this happen. We can’t do it without their support, and as
a Dad, I know it’s the little things we do as parents which make a real
difference to our children’s school day.
"When we look to the international testing,
there’s some evidence to show it’s the countries where parents get
involved in the children’s education which are the most successful. If
we’re to improve our standing internationally that’s got to happen
in Wales as well.
"It’s not complicated, it’s a simple as
making sure they have enough sleep and give support and encouragement at home.
Helping with reading, numbers and homework is really important; but just taking
an interest and showing you care about what happens to them during school can
help them in the long run.
"We all want the best for our children so
let’s go the extra mile. They may not thank you now - but what you do
today will help them do so much better in the future."
