Electoral Commission statement given on the running of the 5 May polls.

Shaun McNally CBE, Chief Executive of the Electoral Commission, said:

“Last week saw the delivery of an important set of elections across the UK.

“This marked the culmination of substantial efforts from across the electoral community. Electoral administrators, polling station staff and many others have worked hard to support voter registration, enable postal and polling station voting, and count the votes that have been cast. The apparent smooth-running of these polls is a testament to their commitment to the democratic process.

“The Commission will now start a process of information gathering and evaluation so that we can formally report in the autumn on how the elections were delivered, and on the experiences of voters, candidates and campaigners.”
