Energy Technology List to expand to include smart technologies

Consultation open to explore scope, definitions, performance and eligibility criteria.

Researchers for BEIS are working to expand the Energy Technology List to include smart technologies for the first time. The ETL is a government list of energy-efficient plant and machinery, highlighting products operating in the top quartile of energy performance.

The list is used as an easy-to-use procurement tool for energy managers, procurement professionals, facilities managers and a wider variety of other professions and organisations. It gives reassurance to purchasers of measured and verified energy performance. The ETL is managed on behalf of government by the Carbon Trust, while consultants ICF provide the technical expertise.

ICF are currently running a survey to inform it’s thinking in this space. Among the issues being explored:

• What should be the scope?
• How to define “smart” products or smart-enabled products and how to categorise software products
• What important standards that need to be referenced or taken into consideration?
• What performance criteria and data is important?
• What products should be included (what should be the eligibility criteria?).

The next phase of research, later in August, will drill down into likely criteria, performance data and estimated carbon and energy savings. Another stakeholder workshop is planned w/c 21 September.
