Foreign and Commonwealth Office files from 1983 released

Over 1,000 Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) records from 1983 are now available to view in the reading rooms at The National Archives. This release contains records from the following file series:

• FCO 8 – Foreign Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Arabian Department and Middle East Department: Registered Files (B and NB Series)
• FCO 9 – Foreign Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Southern European Department: Registered Files (C and WS Series)
• FCO 87 – Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Republic of Ireland Department: Registered Files (WL Series)
• FCO 82 – Foreign and Commonwealth Office: North America Department: Registered Files (AM Series)

The records cover a wide range of subject matters concerning UK relations with the Middle East, Southern Europe, Republic of Ireland and North America. The material reflects events in the territories and the views of Her Majesty’s Government’s at that time. These files will form part of the FCO – Foreign and Commonwealth Office – Registered Files record series.

The National Archives has worked with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to transfer and release files from 1983 in accordance with FCO’s published timeline.
