Green light for £36 million regeneration in North Wales

Carl Sargeant, the
Minister for Housing and Regeneration has given the green light to £36
million of regeneration projects in North
Wales.
Anglesey (£7.49m), Conwy
(£12.02m), Flintshire (£6.02m) and Wrexham (£10.59m) were all
successful in bidding for funding through the Welsh Government’s Vibrant
and Viable Places regeneration scheme. The Minister has now outlined the
projects proposed by the local authorities which he has now offered to
fund.
The Minister
said:
“I’m delighted with
the range of excellent projects which we will be supporting through this
scheme. This Welsh Government funding will see a number of exciting
developments and improvements made across North Wales, whilst at the same time
creating hundreds of jobs and helping to provide for the
community.
“I’ve made no secret
of my priority of providing more good quality homes across Wales and so it will
come as no surprise that many of the proposed regeneration projects have this
at their heart.
“There are projects
targeted at renovating empty properties and bringing them back into use,
attracting more people to live in town centres and improving the quality and
energy efficiency of homes and businesses, for example.
“But I’ve also
approved significant funding for a wide range of different projects, including
further development at Colwyn Bay Waterfront, a Creative Industries and Arts
Centre Development in Wrexham, improvements to the appearance of Deeside town
centre and the regeneration of the Market Hall in
Anglesey.”
The Minister was speaking during
visits to Colwyn Bay and Deeside, where he saw some of the areas that will
benefit from the funding and discussed the potential community benefits with
the local authorities concerned.
He added:
“I’m delighted to
see such a community focus to so many of the projects that have been put
forward by local authorities.
“In North Colwyn Bay, for
example over 500 homes are set to benefit from targeted investment to improve
the property exterior and energy efficiency performance. This project will see
community benefits alongside neighbourhood management, including a
landlord’s loan scheme and the creation of a social lettings
project.
“Amongst the plans for
Deeside is improving the appearance of shop units in the town centre and
encouraging business investment through a grant scheme. The proposed project
will also purchase vacant properties and sites for future business use and for
redevelopment.
“These are just two of the
many worthwhile projects proposed and communities in Wales can look forward to
seeing quality regeneration projects which will make a real difference to
many.”
