What are subject access requests?

Put simply a subject access request (SAR) is a request made by, or on behalf of, an individual to find out what personal data you hold about them, why you hold it and who you disclose it to. 

The right for individuals to make these requests is not new, however, the introduction of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK’s Data Protection Act 2018 have given rise to a number of important changes that are having a significant impact on some organisations:
