The next stage in the redevelopment of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd will commence next week following the approval of a £15.2m package of investment by the Welsh Government, Health and Social Services Minister, Mark Drakeford announced recently (Tuesday 9 February 2015).

Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is currently undergoing a major redevelopment as part of an overall investment of £90m from the Welsh Government.

This next phase includes the continuation of a controlled removal of asbestos and the total refurbishment of the building. This phase will provide the following new departments to replace or add to existing facilities:

Also included in this phase will be the refurbishment of circulation areas, including central core areas, pharmacy escape stairs and main canteen corridor.

Professor Drakeford said:

“The investment we are making in redeveloping Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring the hospital has, and will continue to have, a key role in delivering health services in North Wales.

“Once completed, this investment will significantly improve the care for patients and the working environment for staff.”

The hospital has already benefited from funding to improve the operating theatres in May 2012 and a new mortuary department, which opened in December 2012. The new pathology department opened in September 2013.

The new emergency quarter was opened on October 28, 2014. This was a major milestone for the hospital and is one of the key components of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s redesign to improve the flow of emergency patients - the GP out-of-hours service, the emergency department; the medical assessment unit and the surgical assessment unit have all been brought together under one roof.
