ICO Grants Programme attracts more than 100 applications

The ICO’s first ever funding scheme for external research into data protection and information rights has proved a huge success.

The ICO Grants Programme call for proposals is now officially closed and we have received more than 100 applications from organisations including major universities, civil society groups and think-tanks, both at home and abroad.

Their proposals cover a wide variety of potential privacy enhancing solutions which would benefit UK citizens.

Proposals that meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria will now be put forward for review by an internal ICO panel, which will assess applications against the criteria set out in the Applicant’s Guide.

A second panel, which includes external peers, will then conduct a further review of applications. Applicants will be notified of the outcome following this review. It is anticipated successful applicants will be notified by the end of 2017.

All applicants will be given detailed feedback and those who were unsuccessful this time are free to amend or resubmit their proposals when applications for the 2018-19 programme are opened next year.
