IOPC investigation under way after non-fatal police shooting in Birmingham

3 Oct 2018 12:16 PM

We have begun an investigation after a man was shot and injured by police in Edgbaston, Birmingham, yesterday (Tuesday 2 October).

It is understood a man in his 30s was taken to the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being shot by a firearms officer outside flats at Shepherds Gardens at around 5am. The man’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Initial information indicates that a single shot was fired by an officer taking part in a pre-planned operation, searching for a man wanted in connection with a firearms offence.

After West Midlands Police notified us we sent investigators to the scene of the shooting, and the police post incident procedure. We have gathered police body worn video which will be reviewed, and witness accounts are being provided by the officers involved.

Our investigators remained at the scene yesterday searching for any available CCTV footage and carrying out house to house enquiries, which are expected to continue as the week progresses. They are also overseeing police forensic examinations which have included recovery of a non-police issue firearm.

Anyone with footage or information that could help our investigation should call the IOPC incident line on 0800 029 4692 or email edgbaston@policeconduct.gov.uk

IOPC Regional Director for the West Midlands, Derrick Campbell, said: “This is a serious incident and as is appropriate when police use potentially lethal force we will be carrying out a thorough, independent investigation.

“We will be making contact with the family of the man who was shot and they will be regularly updated on our investigation’s progress.”
