IPCC appeals for witnesses to Llanelli incident

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is appealing for witnesses to help with an investigation into an incident in Llanelli in which a man died after being detained by Dyfed Powys Police officers.

The incident happened in the Sunken Gardens area, near Cowell Street in Llanelli at around 2.15pm on Sunday 8 February.

Police officers had detained two men and a woman. One man ran away from police officers and was stopped after a short pursuit. It is reported that he then suffered a medical emergency and stopped breathing. He was declared dead at the scene by a paramedic.

IPCC investigators were deployed to the scene and an independent investigation has begun. Investigators are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed any part of the incident. The IPCC can be contacted by telephoning  0800 096 9076 or emailing witnessappeal@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk

IPCC Commissioner Jan Williams said: “This was a traumatic experience for everyone involved and my sympathies go out to the man’s  family and friends. We are now conducting an independent investigation to establish exactly what happened. I would urge anyone who might have witnessed the incident to contact us as their information may be crucial to the investigation.”
