The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is independently investigating the Metropolitan Police Service’s (MPS) contact with a man prior to his death in Holloway on Sunday morning.

According to initial police accounts, around 1.30am on Sunday 27 July, MPS officers responded to reports of a disturbance in a flat in Holloway, where they found a 47-year-old man with injuries. Officers provided medical assistance and contacted London Ambulance Service, who attended the flat at 1.50am. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.38am.

The IPCC received a referral from the MPS at 3.30am, and deployed investigators to the scene immediately. IPCC investigators directed the forensic analysis at the scene, and are continuing to carry out enquiries, including reviewing police logs and conducting door-to-door enquiries.

IPCC investigators also attended the post incident procedures at Islington Police station, where the police officers who attended the incident in Holloway provided their initial accounts. As is policy, the officers were given non-conferring warnings by a senior MPS officer and IPCC investigators.

A post mortem is yet to be completed.

IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor said: "IPCC investigators and I met with the man’s family on Sunday to offer our condolences and explain the IPCC’s involvement. This is understandably a devastating loss for the family, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"I have assured them we will be looking closely at what contact MPS officers had with the man during the incident early on Sunday morning.”
