IPCC witness appeal after police pursuit in Manchester ends in fatal collision

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses after a police pursuit that ended in a fatal collision in Old Trafford, Manchester.

The pursuit began at about 3.28am on Sunday, 21 February and ended shortly afterwards when the Mercedes police were pursuing on the A56 Chester Road was involved in a collision with a mini at the junction of Sir Matt Busby Way, after which it collided with a roadside pole.

The 24-year-old man driving the Mercedes was confirmed dead at the scene. Two women in the mini were taken to the Royal Salford Hospital with injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.

The incident was mandatorily referred by Greater Manchester Police to the IPCC. The IPCC  has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances of the pursuit after deploying investigators to the scene. IPCC investigators are urging anyone who witnessed any part of the pursuit or the collision to contact them on 0300 020 0096.

The IPCC’s investigators have already begun to collect evidence relating to the collision including taking initial accounts from the officers involved, gathering CCTV footage, and retrieving the data recorder from the police vehicle.
