Impact of Brexit on agriculture and farm animal welfare debated

On Tuesday 17 October, the House of Lords debates two European Union Committee reports, Brexit: agriculture and Brexit: farm animal welfare.

The two reports contain a number of conclusions and recommendations for Government that arose from the inquiries they undertook.

On agriculture, the Committee concluded that Brexit posed a number of challenges to the sector, not least withdrawing from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, and that a transition period would be needed to manage potential impacts.

On farm animal welfare, the Committee considered how best to maintain the UK’s high standards when the UK market is opened up to free global trade.

Speakers

Lord Teverson, Chairman of the EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee, will open the debate. A full list of Members who are due to speak can be viewed in the Speaker’s Lists
