Independent Venue Week continues for a seventh year thanks to the National Lottery

For the sixth time, Arts Council England is supporting CAN YOU CIC IT and Independent Venue Week and we are pleased to award them £99,364 of National Lottery Project Grant Funding.

The event is a seven-day celebration of small music venues across the UK, which are an essential part of the live music scene across the country.

The 2019 event saw record growth across venues participating, music genres performing across the week and audiences across the country.

In 2020 they will focus on increasing participation with audiences under 18 and over 55 years old, continuing to broaden the genres of music performing, targeting venues in more rural locations and working with venues in areas where engagement with the arts is at its lowest.

This project also aligns with our goals in supporting grass roots music venues, in which additional National Lottery funding has been made available under the Supporting Grassroots Live Music Fund.

Grassroots live music venues and promoters are vital to England’s music ecology, developing music and audiences as well as supporting talent development.

Joyce Wilson, London Area Director, Arts Council England, yesterday said:

“Independent Venue Week provides an important opportunity for those who want a career in music to get involved at a grassroots level, as well as celebrating venues that provide a vital place for communities to engage with arts locally. We’re proud to be supporting CAN YOU CIC IT once again as it has enabled a steady increase in the breadth of genres performed across the country, engaging different audiences and providing opportunities for people across the UK to experience live music”.

Sybil Bell, Founder of Independent Venue Week, Can You CIC It yesterday said:

"We're over the moon that Arts Council England is, for a 6th year running, supporting Independent Venue Week. This enables us to work alongside all of our partners to deliver live shows as well as our new training and education program which we will be announcing later this year. This support means a huge amount to us and everyone that is part of the IVW family all across the country from major city centres to tiny villages and everyone in between. The grant means we can work together with a huge number of people at a local level to create and enjoy another positive, outstanding week of events celebrating venues around the UK – we're so, so grateful."

Independent Venue Week 2020 will take place from Monday 27 January – Sunday 2 February.
