Investigation begins after Cheadle custody death

13 May 2019 12:37 PM

We have begun an independent investigation following the death of a man who had been taken into custody following his arrest at Cheadle yesterday (Sunday 12 May).

We understand that the man, who was aged 57, was detained following a reported disturbance at around 4.30am and became unwell shortly after his arrival at Cheadle Heath Police Station. Police staff provided medical assistance and called for an ambulance, which transported the man to hospital in Stockport.

Sadly the man was pronounced dead at 6.50am.

Greater Manchester Police informed us of the death shortly afterwards and an independentinvestigation was declared at around 7.30am.

We sent investigators to the police post incident procedure and custody suite to begin gathering information, and to meet with members of the man’s family.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

IOPC Regional Director Amanda Rowe yesterday said:

“Our sympathies are with the man’s family and all those affected by his death. We have met with family members to explain our role and we will keep them regularly updated.

“Our investigation is obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying a thorough investigation into all of the circumstances.”
