A child sex offender who conspired with a mother to travel to Canada to rape her children has been jailed following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Alex Dennis, 37, of Pontarddulais, Swansea, discussed plans with the woman to visit her in order to abuse her children while she watched.

He was sentenced to two years at Swansea Crown Court recently. In addition, Dennis was given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and put on the sex offenders’ register.

The mother, with whom Dennis used the online pseudonym Hardatitt, was in fact an undercover member of the Canadian police and the children were fictional.

Dennis asked the officer to show him the children on a video messaging platform and to let him stay at her house.

The NCA’s CEOP Command coordinated his arrest in conjunction with South Wales Police.

He later admitted in interview with NCA officers that he had visited several chat rooms dedicated to discussing child sex abuse.

He also admitted wiping his mobile phone in order to destroy evidence.

Despite claiming in court that his plot was a fantasy on which he had never intended to act, Dennis was convicted on 2 June at Swansea Crown Court of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.

Mick Kiernan, intelligence manager at the NCA, said:

“Dennis thought he was making real plans to commit the most appalling abuse imaginable.

“Our strong links with international partners, in this case the Canadian police, meant we were able to identify the risk he posed.

“NCA officers work day in, day out to keep children safe from those who wish to do them harm.

“Anyone intent on abusing children should know there’s no safe corner of the internet for them to hide in.”
