LC: Annual report 2017-18 published

The Law Commission’s Annual Report 2017-18 has been published.

It reveals another positive year for the independent law reform body with:

• The publication of the 13th Programme of Law Reform – 14 new areas of law from automated vehicles to residential leasehold.
• The 6th Annual Scarman Lecture, delivered by the then Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd.
• Updated figures which show that seven out of every 10 (70%) Law Commission reports have been wholly or partly implemented or accepted over the past half century.
• Three reports with recommendations for reform laid in Parliament.

Law Commission Chair Sir David Bean said:

“This past year has been one of considerable achievement for the Commission.

“Not least, because it saw the launch of our 13thProgramme of Law Reform – a series of highly relevant law reform projects which have the potential to make a real difference to people’s lives.

“I’d like to thank our staff for the expert advice they provide to Commissioners in formulating the Programme and the many other reports and consultations launched over the past year.

“Despite operating under significant budgetary pressure, we will build on this work to continue making the law simpler, clearer and fit for the future.”
