Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, responded to the Independent Review of Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) in England, concluded by the Department for Culture, Tourism and Sport.
“The LGA is pleased this new report recognises the importance of local authorities to tourism, both as leaders of place and as direct deliverers of tourist attractions.
“We agree that DMOs should continue to work closely, and in some cases even more closely, with councils and combined authorities towards their shared ambition to grow the visitor economy in their area. Access to high quality data is crucial to this and we strongly endorse the proposal for creating the Tourism Data Hub as a matter of urgency.
“The tourism industry plays an important role in supporting many local economies and communities, but can be supported to do more. The substantial amount of work and evidence poured into the report has resulted in a strong set of recommendations that if supported by central government, will play a pivotal role in sustaining and developing tourism in these areas.
