Local Government Association housing spokesman Cllr Martin Tett, responds to the Resolution Foundation’s mobility report which says that high rents are reducing the benefits of mobility among young people.

“The housing crisis is forcing families and young people to make difficult choices and in the process is holding back growth. This report reveals the extent to which this is impacting on the opportunities for young people unable to move.

“The Government needs use the Spending Review to give councils the powers to build the right homes in the right places to meet local need and boost affordability. Planning departments also need to be adequately resourced and councils empowered to address local skills gaps, working with local partners and choosing where and how they can invest in skills training.

“In order for local communities to thrive, councils must be at the heart of any decision-making to support the growth of good jobs and the rights skills for young people.”

Notes to editors

  1. Councils in England face an overall funding gap of £8 billion by 2025. The LGA’s #CouncilsCan campaign aims to influence the forthcoming Spending Review and highlight the growing risk to vital local services if the Government does not take action to secure the financial sustainability of councils.

#CouncilsCan: Spending Review 2019
