Local projects make a world of difference thanks to National Lottery cash

Healthy lifestyles, community transport for asylum seekers, and building music technology skills in young people are among the latest projects being awarded National Lottery money.
Newydd Housing Association in Cardiff are one of seven projects across Wales sharing in £1,982,233 as part of the latest round of the Big Lottery Fund’s People and Places programme. (For a full list of awards, click here).
The awards are made possible thanks to money being set aside for good causes from National Lottery ticket sales.
They will use £769,369 to support individuals through a one-to-one service, workshops and intervention activities to improve their overall health and wellbeing. This will include food and nutrition, physical activity, emotional wellbeing and life skills, and specialist services will be delivered by partners including mental health first aid and counselling.
Paul Roberts, Chief Executive of Newydd said, “I am ecstatic that this project has been extended, many people have told us that hapi has made a huge difference to their lives, so the fact that we can now offer support to many more people over the next five years is brilliant. We will be recruiting for more staff in the coming months and look forward to hitting the ground running once more.”
Other funded projects include African Community Centre in Swansea who receive £249,945 to provide a community transport scheme for isolated asylum seekers. They will improve the lives of asylum seekers through enabling better access to learning opportunities, essential services and social opportunities.
Also in Swansea, Swansea Music Art Dance Community Interest Company will use £249,903 to work with marginalised groups to upskill them in technology-based skills using informal drop-in sessions.
Highlighting the importance of the People and Places programme, Rona Aldrich, Wales Committee Member for the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Programmes like People and Places are making a difference to the lives of so many people in communities across Wales.
“It delivers on our promise to use National Lottery funding to regenerate and revitalise communities, tackle disadvantage head on and leave a lasting legacy.”
