Summit on tackling rising food costs

Ministers will hold discussions on how to tackle rising food costs and food affordability with retailers, food producers, farmers, fishers, regulators, business organisations and anti-poverty charities today.

The discussions will inform the Scottish Government’s consultation on legal price caps on essential food items, which aims to ease pressure on households while protecting the interests of producers, retailers and the wider food industry.

Minister for Business Tom Arthur will open the summit. He said:

“The cost of living crisis is the biggest issue facing people in Scotland right now. Too many families are struggling to put food on the table, and bold action to help households is necessary.

“Last week, we published draft legislation which aims to make essential food items more affordable for households struggling to pay for their weekly shop, particularly those on lower incomes.

“Our shared ambition is straightforward – for people to be able to access affordable, nutritious food while supporting a food industry that is resilient, sustainable, competitive and successful.

“And today, I am bringing partners together to discuss those proposals and how we can help households struggling with food costs. The insights gathered will be valuable as we work to ensure every household in Scotland can afford their weekly shop.”
