Ministry of Defence makes little progress with reforming civilian workforce

Public Accounts Committee Chair Meg Hillier MP has commented on a report published today by the National Audit Office, which examines progress by the Ministry of Defence to reform its civilian workforce.

Chair's comments

“The NAO’s report finds that the Ministry of Defence has made no real progress since 2015 in reforming its civilian workforce – it has missed its headcount reduction and savings targets, it doesn’t have the information it needs to plan properly, and it is hampered by defence organisations working in silos.

“Added to this, defence organisations don’t have enough skilled staff in some areas and have no clear plans to resolve this problem in the next five years.

“The Department needs to get a grip urgently on the management of its civilian workforce to ensure it has the crucial skills in place to meet the UK’s current and future defence needs.”
