NCA report and accounts 2016-17

The National Crime Agency yesterday (Thursday 20 July) published its annual report and accounts and laid them before Parliament.

The report shows the agency’s finances for the financial year 2016/17, and its performance against three broad areas of threat: 

• Prosperity, including cyber and financial crime;
• Vulnerability, including child sexual exploitation, modern slavery, human trafficking and organised immigration crime; and
• Commodity, including firearms and drugs.

Introducing the report NCA Director General Lynne Owens said:

“The dedication and commitment of our officers, and the many partners we work alongside, is reflected in our operational achievements, some of which are set out in this report. The public in the UK and abroad are safer as a result of our efforts.

“We are not complacent however. The nature of serious and organised crime evolves, as do the tactics deployed by criminals, and we must keep pace.”

Performance data in the report shows that in the period April 2016 to end March 2017, NCA activity led to:

• the arrest of 1,441 people in the UK
• 1,176 arrests overseas
• a conviction rate of 95 per cent
• 1,896 children being safeguarded
• the seizure of almost 600 firearms.

The NCA was involved in the seizure of almost 90 tonnes of class A drugs in the UK and abroad.

The agency also registered more than 1,700 ‘disruptions’ against organised crime, where action by law enforcement impacted on a group or individual’s ability to conduct criminal activity.
