A spokesperson for the Welsh NHS Confederation said: “There is no doubt that emergency healthcare services across Wales and the rest of the UK have been extremely busy in recent weeks.

Staff are continuing to work hard to meet demand and reduce waits for patients and it is important that we recognise these efforts.

“It is also important that we do not look at A&E in isolation. The pressures on emergency services are indicative of pressures across the whole of the NHS and social care.

“A health service fit for the future should help people to stay healthy, and design care and treatment around people’s needs. This includes shifting care away from the hospital and into the community. As society changes, the health service must also do so.

“In order to achieve this, the public must work alongside the NHS and recognise their responsibility in looking after their own health and using the health service wisely.”
