New investment in school sport welcomed

The government is investing £22.5m in enrichment opportunities for young people at more than 400 secondary schools in disadvantaged communities

We welcome today’s announcement that the government is investing £22.5 million to provide more opportunities for secondary school children in disadvantaged communities, including the chance to get involved in sport.

The programme, which will be delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, will see hundreds of thousands more young people participating in ‘enriching’ activities in and beyond the classroom, such as joining sports teams or taking part in outdoor adventures.

And our executive director for the sporting system, Phil Smith, says improving access to sport and physical activity from a young age is vital to build the foundations for a long and healthy life.

"Sport England welcomes this investment, which will help more than 400 schools in disadvantaged communities expand the sporting opportunities available to their pupils," Phil said.

"Positive experiences of sport and physical activity can build confidence, strengthen connections and create a sense of belonging, while helping young people develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.

"Through our place-based work, we have seen that lasting change happens when communities are listened to and local organisations work together to meet their particular needs.

"Schools can be at the heart of this approach, and the Youth Sport Trust is brilliantly placed to deliver the programme, drawing on its extensive experience of connecting schools with partners and helping more young people enjoy the benefits of being active."
