New speed limits to help road safety

We are looking to pilot 20mph speed limits at eight locations in central London in a move to increase road safety in the Capital.

The locations have been chosen where there is the greatest potential to reduce casualties, increase active travel and enhance communities.

The first confirmed location will be Commercial Street in Tower Hamlets and will start when other roads in the borough roads are being made 20mph.

Once implemented, the zone could then be extended to cover the 'Shoreditch Triangle' and sections of the A10. The remaining seven pilots would then be introduced throughout 2015 and 2016.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport said: 'Although large sections of the TfL Road Network are main arterial roads, some sections pass through busy town centres, which are more attuned to lower speed limits as they have high pedestrian and cyclist numbers. Piloting 20mph speed limits form a key part of our continuing work to make central London safer, pleasant and more attractive for all.'

The pilots are part of the Mayor's Safe Streets for London plan which aims to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured on London's roads by 40 per cent.
