Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange in Cornwall has been awarded £550,000 over three years, as part of the National Partners Programme 2019-2022. The grant will support the organisation to present exhibitions that showcase and are inspired by work from the Arts Council Collection.

Through a sustained presence across the three years, the National Partners have an opportunity to build a deeper relationship between audiences and the Arts Council Collection.  For Newlyn, the curatorial voice informing the exhibitions will come from different communities and individuals in Cornwall, communities and individuals representative of the diversity of contemporary Britain.

James Green, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange Director recently said:

“We want to invite local people and different communities to select work from the national collection, curating exhibitions which reflect their interests or concerns.”

Funded by the National Lottery, the National Partners Programme aims to increase the diversity and number of people enjoying the Collection, and to support organisational development in regional art galleries. As part of the Groundwork programme last summer, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange took Janet Cardiff’s ‘Motet For Forty Voices’ to the edge of Treneere estate in Penzance, the most deprived ward of Cornwall, attracting 8,000 visitors over its short run. Following on from this success, Newlyn will continue with off-site programming, exhibiting the Arts Council Collection in Penzance and Newlyn, as well as in non-gallery locations across Newlyn, Penzance, Penwith and on digital platforms.
