Next steps for the Durham Commission

Set up in September 2017 as a collaboration between the Arts Council and Durham University, the Durham Commission is working to examine the role creativity and creative thinking play in education - not only in arts subjects but throughout the curriculum. Since launching in March 2018, the Commission has been gathering a mass of evidence from various sources.  The Commission is now examining the evidence and considering its recommendations.

This has included a survey of over 1,000 stakeholders from business, education and the arts; a survey of head-teachers and governors across the country; meetings with stakeholders, a review of previous reports and initiatives into creativity and education, and one-to-one interviews with the Commissioners.

This work has helped the Commission approach key questions about the relationship between creativity and education: How can creativity be recognised?  What are the challenges and opportunities when embedding creativity in schools, and in the workplace?  Who should be responsible for promoting creativity across the country?

The Commission is now examining the evidence and considering its recommendations.  These will be released in a final report which will be launched on 10 September 2019, at an event for parliamentarians, media and stakeholders, in Westminster.  A further, larger conference will follow in October, in Durham.
